As Colombia prepares to privatise Bogotá’s public telco, ETB, Telefónica and Millicom have been flagged up as potential buyers.

etb bogota 1 may 2017This isn’t the first time that the telcos have shown interest in the fibre operator, which offers services including IPTV and high-speed broadband. When Bogotá’s Government initially considered whether to sell off the public company, Millicom stated that ETB would complement its Colombian telecom and pay-TV business.

Telefónica’s interest goes even further back, as the Spanish telco sounded out the authorities seven years ago, before the public telco was for sale.

Now, local analysts are highlighting the possible interest of both companies, as ETB officially enters a privatisation process that will be decided by July.

The telco, Colombia’s seventh largest operator with 700,000 clients and a newly-launched IPTV service, may be a small business, but it holds a strong position in the country’s capital and has the most up-to-date fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network.

Bogotá’s local Government has stated that it expects to get over $800 million, a price decided upon according to an analysis by the investment banks JP Morgan and BTG Pactual.
