The Real Madrid vs. FC Barcelona game continues to fuel the Ultra HD revolution, with the announcement by Vodafone of the first country-wide live 4K broadcast in Spain.

santiago bernabeu 21 april 2017For the last three years, UHDTV has been gaining ground as a powerful ally of live sports broadcasts in Spain. El Clásico, the most eagerly anticipated La Liga match in the country and one of the most followed sports events worldwide, is not alien to this trend.

Vodafone TV has now announced that next Sunday’s game at Santiago Bernabeu stadium will be available in Ultra HD for all suitable subscribers, marking the first nationwide 4K live broadcast in Spain.

Aiming to boost its recently revamped 4K offering, the British telco will enable an Ultra HD signal for those subscribers owning a 4K screen and the latest TiVo-based set-top box. In addition, as part of its hospitality offering, the thousandth Ronaldo vs. Messi duel will be also available in 4K for bars and restaurants.

Since Mediapro produced the first 4K test feed from Real Madrid’s stadium in March 2014, Ultra HD technology has become increasingly important for sports content producers, broadcasters and La Liga itself. Starting this year, the Spanish competition intends to gradually equip every stadium with 4K and 360° technology.
