Indian direct-to-home (DTH) operator Videocon d2h is integrating the Hungama Play video-on-demand (VOD) app to its HD Smart Connect set-top box (STB).

Videocon d2h logo 20 April 2017Videocon d2h’s HD Smart STB converts existing TV into an Internet-connected TV, delivering 650 channels and services in HD and SD, as well as online digital content on demand. The Hungama service provides some 35,000 hours of content in 12 languages, spanning films, TV series, children’s shows and music videos.

“Our HD smart connect set-top box aims to provide an app store experience,” explained Videocon d2h executive chairman Saurabh Dhoot. “We are delighted to have Hungama available as an app; our consumer will have a wider choice of movies with Hungama coming on board.

Added Hungama Play CEO Siddhartha Roy: “Through this technology, we hope to reach a larger segment of users and offer them an enhanced entertainment experience, with the best of Hollywood, Bollywood, regional movies, kids content, music videos and more, all on their television screens.”

The DTH space in India has seen a flurry of activity recently, with Videocon d2h rival Airtel Digital last week launching an Android TV-powered STB with 500 HD TV channels, Wi-Fi and integrated Netflix. Telco Reliance Jio is also expected to launch an STB with accompanying TV service soon.

This latest move follows two recent tie-ups between Videocon d2h and other digital content providers. Last month Videocon partnered with Indian streaming service Sony LIV and US streaming giant Netflix to add their apps to its HD Smart Connect STB for DTH subscribers.
