Accusing CNN of using its channels to attack Nicolás Maduro’s Government, Venezuela’s telecom authority Conatel is increasing pressure on the group.

conatel mendezAfter CNN en Español was banned from all Venezuelan pay-TV platforms, the media company has used its networks abroad as well as its YouTube channel inside the country to defend its position.

At the same time, pro-Government Venezuelan media have been increasing their attacks on CNN en Español, defending the official argument that caused the ban by Conatel: that CNN is putting national stability at risk.

In fact, the director of Conatel, Andrés Eloy Méndez, has just launched a YouTube channel through which he directly accuses Turner, Timer Warner and AT&T of being behind what he calls CNN’s manipulated information.

Conatel’s director compares the banning of CNN with the recent decision by Argentina’s Government to switch off Venezuela’s TeleSUR in the country. According to Méndez, the international community and media companies have reacted very differently to both situations.

As tension between the two factions increases, there is no sign of CNN en Español returning to air any time soon. The conflict could go the same way as the Colombian channels RTVC and NTN24, which have been banned from Venezuela’s line-ups for years.
