Further increasing its broad reach in the UK, Sony Pictures Television Networks (SPTN) has inked a deal with Turner to buy 24-hour entertainment channel truTV.

sony true cast 16 FebTruTV launched in the UK in August 2014 and reached on average 3.9 million viewers each month in 2016. When it began life in the summer of 2014, truTV was given the mission by Turner to replicate the success of its US version of the channel which was then watched in 93 million homes. The channel, said Turner at the time, would "entertain and amuse" through a mix of original and unscripted programming showcasing content which focused on real people and situations. The UK bouquet also built on original unscripted content from Turner US, complemented by a slate of acquisitions in partnership with third parties such as Endemol and Zodiak Rights.

Under the terms of the new deal SPTN will with immediate effect fully own and operate the channel and its company in the UK. The acquisition includes taking a selection of the existing truTV content library with acquired series such as Snapped, Paranormal Survivor and Ink Master. Turner will continue to represent ad sales for the channel while Sky Media will continue to sell advertising on behalf of all other Sony channels.

Sony Pictures Television Networks has spent the recent past embarking on an aggressive expansion plan, now owning 18 channels in the UK, and reaching a combined viewership of more than 25 million people per month. Operating across the Sky, Virgin, Freeview and Freesat platforms, the SPTN UK channel brands include Sony Channel, Sony Movie Channel and Movies4Men.

Commenting on the purchase, executive vice president, Western Europe, international networks, Kate Marsh, said: “The acquisition of truTV increases Sony’s already broad reach in the UK TV market and the channel’s strong mix of unscripted and original programming will be a great complement to our portfolio.”

Added Turner senior vice president and managing director of Northern Europe Ian McDonough: “Since launch, truTV has delivered solid ratings and ad sales and built a loyal fan base. As such, we are delighted that UK viewers can continue to enjoy truTV’s unique blend of entertainment as part of Sony’s portfolio. Sony’s acquisition of the channel enables us to focus our energy on developing our own franchises and brands, delivering content across multiple touchpoints to our fans wherever and however they choose to engage.”
