Indian journalist Barkha Dutt is joining online news platform The Quint to cover elections in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, following her recent departure from broadcaster NDTV.

Bharka Dutt journalistOn The Road With Barkha will map the Uttar Pradesh (UP) elections using mobile phone cameras instead of outside broadcast vehicles, and speak directly to the local population to provide “a platform to voices”, that, The Quint says, “are seldom heard”.

The programme will “criss-cross the state to talk to voters and political players across villages, dhabas, colleges and farms to bring you extensive ground reports from the political cradle of the country,” The Quint added in a statement.

Barkha Dutt said: “I am really excited to collaborate with The Quint on this, and push the boundaries of this new and exciting digital medium.”

Rita Kapur, co-founder of digital media company Quintillion Media, said: “The combination of Barkha Dutt and The Quint is a powerful one. It will bring a completely new brand of journalism and media experience to India's increasingly sophisticated digital consumer. This combination of immersive journalistic storytelling, social media and the interactive user will redefine this space.”

Quintillion Media was co-founded by Kapur and her husband, Network 18 founder Raghav Bahl. Its flagship products are in English and in Hindi. It has also established a multi-platform partnership with Bloomberg Media called BloombergQuint, covering business and financial media.
