An updated Android app has been released for South African subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service ShowMax to support Android TV.

“Our engineering department has been working flat-out to increase the number of devices that can play ShowMax, and this is the fifth major expansion since we launched ShowMax just over a year ago. It means that anyone with a compatible Android media player or smart TV running Android software can access ShowMax without having to invest in any new equipment,” said Barron Ernst, chief product officer for ShowMax.

In order to run ShowMax, Android devices must be running Android 4.1.0 (Jelly Bean) or higher.

The new app includes an optimised user interface for Android TV, with a large screen layout, support added for remote control input, and support for higher resolution video.

The Android TV operating system was launched by Google in June 2014 and designed to either be built directly into smart TVs or support standalone media players which can then be plugged into standard TVs to impart smart TV capabilities.
