As the final step to transform Movistar into a digital TV provider in Peru, the telco is launching smart set-top boxes (STBs) which enable access to cloud-based video-on-demand (VOD).

deco smart hdAs announced during the last Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Deco Smart HD completes the new services scheduled to launch by Telefónica in Peru in 2016. The live football mobile app Fútbol Movistar and the arrival of Movistar Play, the telco’s over-the-top (OTT) service for Latin America, were Telefónica’s other releases in the Peruvian TV and video market.

The Deco Smart HD is a regular HD STB which enables access to a selection of Movistar’s series, films and kids’ content available on the cloud and on demand. Access to such content will depend on which packages viewers subscribe to.

The wireless box, for which customers will pay on top of their regular subscription, enables any TV to become smart, making it possible to install different apps.

“We are aware TV habits are changing, which is why we have launched this STB enabling our customers to choose what to watch and when to watch it,” said Luis Acuña, director for residential business, Movistar Peru. “We intend that 200,000 subscribers will have installed this STB by the end of 2017.”
