Singapore has become the test bed for the BBC’s first TV everywhere (TVE) product, following the launch of subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service BBC Player on pay-TV platform StarHub.

BBC PlayerHRiPad Image1StarHub viewers who subscribe to the UK broadcaster’s channels will now be able to catch up or download BBC programmes online or via an iOS or Android app. It is the first time BBC Worldwide has partnered with an affiliate to offer subscribers an authenticated TVE product.

BBC Player will feature curated content on demand from six BBC global channels – BBC Earth, BBC First, BBC Lifestyle, CBeebies and BBC World News – as well as BBC Brit, which launches in Asia on BBC Player.

“We’ve introduced BBC Brit, BBC Earth and BBC First to countries all around the world but this is the first time we've given fans of premium British entertainment, documentary and drama, along with children's and news, their own dedicated space to stream, download and enjoy their favourite shows wherever and whenever they want,” said Paul Dempsey, president global markets, BBC Worldwide (BBCW).

“BBC Player looks great, is easy to navigate and has world-class content. While we are fully focused on the launch in Singapore, the potential of this product is very exciting,” he added.

Howie Lau, chief marketing officer, StarHub, said: “We are delighted that StarHub TV customers will be the first in Asia to enjoy BBC Player. BBC Player not only complements our pay TV offering, it also delivers BBC’s signature content seamlessly across our customers’ devices, deepening the overall entertainment experience.”

The SVOD service will carry the critically acclaimed Amazon/BBCW drama The Collection, as well as the fourth series of cult drama Sherlock, staring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. BBC Player will also offer the latest Top Gear series, Louis Theroux: A Different Brain, Go Jetters and Planet Earth II following its UK premiere later this year.
