Esteban Iriarte has been promoted to chief operating officer (COO) of Millicom, in charge of all the telco’s Latin American operations.

esteban marceloIriarte was one of the leading figures in the UNE-Tigo merger in Colombia, and headed the resultant company from August 2014.

From 1 August he will now be in charge of Millicom’s seven operations in Latin America, and will take a place on the company’s global executive board. Marcelo Cataldo, current commercial VP at Tigo-UNE, will replace Iriarte as president of the Colombian company.

“I have appointed Esteban Iriarte for this role due to his expertise in residential business and B2B as well as his success as Tigo-UNE president in Colombia,” stated Mauricio Ramos, CEO, Millicom.

As COO, Iriarte will face diversifying business across Latin America, as Tigo has moved from being a mobile operator to become a cable TV provider and a strong telco in most of the territories in which it is operating, buying and merging with different local operators across the region.

Besides, it has recently started deploying an ambitious over-the-top (OTT) strategy aimed to driving data consumption through complementary video services.
