To serve its growing number of multiscreen users, BT has revealed that it is standardising on Elemental Technologies software solutions to unify its traditional and multiscreen headends.

4116The UK IPTV provider will be using Elemental software-defined video (SDV) solutions to serve a variety of delivery platforms including the BT TV Everywhere, BT Sport App, and BT Ultra HD services. The capability to host the latter was demonstrated successfully at an event in London featuring live coverage of the Champions League semi-final between Manchester City and Real Madrid on the BT Sport Ultra HD channel, the first live sports platform of its kind in the UK and Europe.

The BT infrastructure uses Elemental for high-efficiency video coding (HEVC/H.265) and 4K content processing and delivery. End-to-end SDV solutions from Elemental support the BT TV Everywhere offer, which enables BT customers to watch TV channels on multiple devices once they authenticate as subscribers. Elemental also employs a unified head-end for subscription linear channels delivered to IPTV set-top boxes as well as multiscreen devices. For the BT Sport App, Elemental Delta enables start-over viewing for UEFA Champions League games through its live-to-VOD output filter.

“Proven, scalable SDV solutions from Elemental enable BT to give subscribers the ultimate viewing experience while giving us the flexibility to expand our services in a rapidly-changing marketplace,” said Greg McCall, MD of TV technology and content for BT. “Through our partnership with Elemental, we are increasing operational efficiency, assuring the highest quality 4K services for our viewers, and providing customers a unified experience across multiple delivery platforms.”
