Smartphone usage is on the up in Chile and social networks and online video platforms are growing hand to hand with the trend.

chile uso youtubeAnalysing the behaviour of half a million mobile customers, Movistar's big data department has published a report attempting to identify the trends for 2016, and it looks like online video is going to lead data traffic among mobile screens.

The YouTube app is used, on average, for one hour and three minutes per day, only beaten by Facebook (one hour and 31 minutes) and WhatsApp (one hour and 15 minutes).

“As with other streaming platforms, YouTube has done a great job with content. We have seen consumption rocket since the app has automatically played one video after another,” explained Enric Ancelovici, business intelligence and big data manager, Movistar Chile.

After Facebook, WhatsApp and YouTube, the report highlights Gmail, Hotmail, Google Chrome, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Apple Map and Twitter as the services Chileans like to use most.

“Social networks have become an essential service; this is the main trend we are identifying,” added Ancelovici. “And Web browsing has also increased as content is more responsive. Besides, Chileans are getting more and more digital, producing and storing more content (pictures and videos) themselves.”
