Immersed in a race to offer the fastest broadband in Spain, now that over-the-top (OTT) services are flourishing in the country, Orange has successfully tested a fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network able to offer speeds of up to 1Gbps thanks to XG-PON technology.
With Telefónica commercially offering a 300Mbps connection in Spain, Orange, has tested XG-PON, an evolution of GPON or Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Networks, which enables four times faster download speeds and two times upload speeds.
In addition, Orange, has connected the technology to a mobile station, maximising the speed transmission of 4G mobile networks.
The XG-PON technology builds end-to-end transmission on the existing fibre network, but reduces the amount of cable and central office equipment needed to deliver the same broadband, so there is no need to change the fibre infrastructure.
The French-based company, which covers five million homes across Spain following its recent acquisition of Jazztel, is said to be already working on Time Wavelength Division Multiplexing (PON TWDM-PON) technology, which is to be tested from September.
