Aiming to steal a march on rivals at the world's top CE show, Samsung has taken the wraps off not just its latest UltraHD technology but also the formation of an alliance to establish premium quality standards.
The new SUHD TV line is claimed to celebrate a major milestone in the Ultra HD era, surpassing previous displays, delivering superior picture quality in terms of contrast, brightness and colour.
All Samsung SUHD TVs will have a re-mastering engine to deliver what is says is an unrivalled viewing experience utilising Samsung's proprietary, eco-friendly nano-crystal technology and intelligent SUHD re-mastering to deliver clear advances in contrast, brightness, colour reproduction. The technology provides viewers with 64 times more colour expression than conventional TVs, producing images with darker blacks and an elevated brightness 2.5 times brighter and with twice the colour adjustment points.
The formation of the UHD Alliance is designed to make sure that these developments are grounded within the content industry whose products the screens are meant to show. Indeed Samsung says that the alliance will set the bar for next-generation video entertainment by establishing new standards to support innovation in video technologies including 4K and higher resolutions, high dynamic range, wider colour range and immersive 3D audio. The UHD Alliance will ensure that premium Ultra HD content and devices will be clearly identified so people can easily recognise them in-store.
The Alliance will see Samsung teaming with DIRECTV, Dolby, LG Electronics, Netflix, Panasonic Corporation, Sharp Corporation, Sony Visual Product, Technicolor, The Walt Disney Studios, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros Entertainment.
"As the UHD environment continues to evolve, we are strengthening our commitment to high quality UHD content and devices," said Hyunsuk Kim, president, visual display business at Samsung Electronics. "The Alliance will encourage the development of high quality UHD content while distinguishing TVs that provide the most premium UHD viewing experience."
"The innovative advancements and quality improvements with TVs are evolving rapidly, as seen throughout CES," added Mike Dunn, president, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. "The UHD Alliance will benefit consumers by identifying products and content that will give the true UHD experience."
As Dunn left the stage at a packed gathering at CES 2015, Samsung took time to note the curved design of the new TV, intended to provide viewers with more immersive viewing. The first in the new line, the Samsung SUHD TV JS9500, will feature Samsung's Chamfer bezel design, adding more depth to the TV screen, with a frame designed to makes the TV look like a piece of art when mounted on the wall. At the product's unveiling in Las Vegas, chief designer Yves Behar said that his job was to enhance technology to an art form, designing the set as a thin curve with all of the complexity in base, lifting it off the ground.
The company also revealed that from 2015 all of its smart TVs will be based on the Tizen operating system, powering the connected TV functionality and bringing second-screen experiences to the main screen. With Quick Connect, Samsung smart TVs automatically recognise Samsung smartphones once paired via BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) technology. People can share video content from their Samsung smartphone to their smart TV with the press of a button and can watch TV through their mobile devices without any apps or pre-settings.
