TV is no longer alone in Latin American living rooms, with over 80% of connected families using a second-screen device while watching their favourite show.
According to a Business Bureau report, second screen consumption is a regular habit in the region, with the trend specially marked in some countries. “In Peru, Brazil and Chile the percentage of second-screen users is 84-87%,” said Verónica Bianchini, media analyst at Business Bureau.
The report is based on online surveys and shows 61% of linear TV users like to use their second screen to check and comment on Facebook while watching TV. Surfing the Internet and checking email is the second most preferred activity among mobile screen users (56%) while 42% of them use their devices to chat or send short messages.
Business Bureau's research points also to Twitter's low penetration in the region, as only 18% of viewers said they tweeted while watching TV, less than gaming (25%) or Googling the on-air show (20%). Still, the percentage of Twitter users as a second-screen increases to 26% in the youngest audience segment (under 24 years old).
