Akamai Technologies and Telefónica Global Solutions have announced a content distribution agreement through which the Spanish telco will add Akamai's catalogue to its international offer.

In addition, both companies have created an innovation committee through which they will develop new products together and explore future opportunities, especially with regard to mobile business.

The Spanish company. which is reinforcing its distribution business by increasing its offer to other telcos, provides digital video and Web solutions to nearly 323 million customers worldwide, including 254 million mobile subscribers.

"We are witnesses to a rapid increase in connectivity among every kind of device, and a video demand which is higher every day," said Juan Carlos López Vives, president, Telefónica Global Solutions. "Our alliance with Akamai reinforces our commitment, taking Telefónica to the centre of the digital revolution."

"Telefónica is a worldwide leader in integrated telecoms, with a very strong presence in Europe and LATAM," added Tom Leighton, Akamai's CEO. "Akamai continues expanding and increasing its investment through the world-leading operators, and with Telefónica we intend to expand our business opportunities through Latin American emerging markets and Spain."

According to Telefónica, the alliance provides greater distribution of Akamai servers within Telefonica's IP network and provides additional capacity within Spain and Latin America. The result is greater network efficiency, better service quality for end users, and a more secure system.
