German commercial TV broadcaster RTL will launch a German adaption of Israeli music talent casting show Rising Star this year.

Musicians wanting to participate can now register on RTL's website. In live TV shows they compete for a one-year music scholarship and a record label contract.

As a special feature, Rising Star combines a new social media voting system with classic elements of a casting show. Instead of telephone or SMS, TV viewers vote in real-time through a free-of-charge app with their smartphone during the presentations - visible for the artist and the studio audience on a large LED screen.

Along with the jury, viewers decide live which participants enter the next round, who's out, and who will be the winner. Rising Star will be produced by RTL subsidiary Norddeich TV. The jury members and the hosts will be announced at a later stage.

Rising Star debuted with great success in Israel in 2013. The format has already been sold to 11 countries including the UK (ITV), France (M6), Spain (Antena 3), Russia (Rossiya 1), USA (ABC) and Brazil (Globo).
