German technical services provider Media Broadcast has developed a new solution for internet-based on-demand-services to appear on the TV screen using connected TV sets or set-top-boxes.

The core of the system, which is shown at the IBC trade fair in Amsterdam, is a barker channel which transmits additional service information (SI) data linking to online portals or live-streams hosted by various content providers on the internet.

The web-based offerings appear in the EPG along with the conventional linear TV channels and are accessible through the remote control of the TV set or set-top-box, thereby converging broadband with broadcast content. The viewers can navigate through the offerings from both worlds on a single platform.

The solution, which supports the HbbTV standard, can be used for broadcasts on all digital transmission infrastructures such as cable, satellite or DTT.
