Although some observers have recently criticized the low quality of Spain's DTT channels, there are some exceptions. Pay-DTT services from AXN and Gol TV or free-to-air services Disney Channel, Antena 3's Neox, Televisión Española's TeleDeporte have now been joined by the MTV music channel.

MTV's free-to-air transmissions on DTT start today in a historic move for the Viacom media group which has mainly been offering its channels via pay-TV for years (although MTV was one of Europe's first unencrypted satellite TV channels in the mid 90s).

MTV Spain was born some ten years ago and the channel has followed youth trends by launching multi-media, multitasking and multi-platform content.

The in-the-clear transmissions of MTV will be mainly based on programming including TV series, docu-realities, self productions and, of course, music.

"In MTV we are optimistic, compromised, unique and fun. The youngsters identify themselves with the channel's values as their own. Our brand generates passion in all it makes: music and also in life," said Antonio Campo Dall'Orto, executive vice president of Music Brands and Managing Director of South Europe for MTV Networks.
