astraDigital television is increasingly popular in Switzerland. At the end of 2009, around 1.4 million households received digital TV signals across all platforms, an increase of 34% compared with last year.

Around half of Switzerland's total of 2.9 million TV households have now made the move to digital television, whether cable, satellite, terrestrial or IPTV. Last year, the figure was 1.1 million, or 37%. The data comes from the Satellite Monitor which market research institute TNS Infratest compiles each year for satellite operator SES Astra.

With 92% of satellite households now digital, DTH satellite reception considerably lies ahead of cable in Switzerland which only has a 31% digital share. However, in the ways of reception, cable remains the leading infrastructure.

Out of Switzerland's total of 2.9 million analogue and digital TV households, 2.1 million have a cable subscription, corresponding with a 71% market share. 530,000 households own a satellite dish (18% market share), 200,000 households have opted for IPTV (7%) and 110,000 households rely on DTT (4%).
