Spain's main network operator Abertis Telecom is deploying the first hybrid terrestrial-satellite mobile TV network in Spain as part of the Mobile World Congress 2010 taking place in Barcelona this week.

abertis_telecom_dvb-shThe operator is showing DVB-SH signal distribution under the DVB-SH standard combining the use of terrestrial and satellite networks. This trial is a consequence of the collaboration of the company with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the country's Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce.

The collaboration of these parties support and finance the FURIA and J-Ortigia projects and allow the transmission of TV signals in vehicles combining the terrestrial and satellite networks in the same service. The infrastructure deployed by Abertis Telecom includes its transport and broadcasting TV installations in Torre Collserola in Barcelona as well as the capacity of the Eutelsat satellite system. Several transmitters installed in this city on occasion of the trade show will complete the coverage of the broadcasting in the outer and inner space of different Congress pavilions.

Abertis Telecom is broadcasting through these networks the programming of tens of radio and television channels of the main national and international broadcasters. These demonstrations allow it to compare different technologies in the Congress as well as the behaviour of several types of applications and interactive services.
