There's a new trend in Spain's DTT equipment market. Recently, integrated digital TV (idTV) sets were kings in the shops but now this trend seems to have changed. In June, sales of idTV sets fell 19%.
While sales of DTT boxes also dropped in the month, they fell only 5%, according to the latest data from consultants GfK. Accumulated sales of either type of equipment add up to more than 20 million units.
Sales of idTVs in the month fell to 259,335 units. Something similar occurred with computers and DVD players with DTT tuners integrated, whose sales dropped 30% and 11% respectively. Only the external DTT boxes maintained the same level of sales as in the previous months, increasing 15% in June to 384,973 units.
The main reasons for this change is the economic crisis which is strongly affecting consumers' pockets . Many would rather buy equipment priced at €60 than TV sets for €800, for example.
This downturn comes at a time when the country is in the middle of the process of the first phase of the national analogue switch off affecting some 4.3 million people. However, some experts critizice that this first phase would have to push the market.
