Telekom Malaysia is seriously considering bidding to operate the country’s digital-terrestrial platform later this year.

Regulator the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will put the operation of the digital TV spectrum out to tender in the third quarter of the year. TM’s chief executive Datuk Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa told local reporters he would look into participating in the process.

The winning bidder will roll out and operate the digital-terrestrial network carrying Malaysia’s free-to-air channels. TM already operates the analogue broadcasting network and while it considers that its “core” broadcasting business, Zamzamzairani said that the company would explore other elements of digital broadcasting.

Malaysia plans to move to digital broadcasting by 2015.
