Austria plans to accelerate the introduction of high definition television by offering subsides for HDTV receivers.

Under the scheme, buyers would receive a voucher to make the acquisition of new devices more affordable. To this end, media authority RTR wants to apply to the EU Commission for an adjustment of Austria's digitalisation fund regulations.

The current guidelines allow financial incentives only for viewers who switch from analogue to digital reception. With the change, RTR hopes to secure support for viewers who already receive digital television to upgrade to new digital transmission standards such as HDTV or innovative developments like digital value-added services, as these also contribute to highlighting the benefits of digital over analogue television.

The expansion comes at a convenient time for public broadcaster ORF, which wants to launch an HDTV channel in time for this year's European Soccer Championships. Under the current system, viewers who purchase DTT or cable set-top-boxes receive vouchers of between EUR 30 and 60.
