Pakistan to show TV cookery showdown with India

Pakistan's Geo TV is to air 'Foodistan', the culinary clash between 16 Indian and Pakistani chefs, from 11 February.

The cookery show is already being broadcast on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings by India's NDTV Good Times channel.

It has received global attention due to the rivalry of the neighbouring nations since it went on air in India on 23 January. However, the broadcasters say the show is all about the food.

"Both the countries, India and Pakistan have taste buds that have been nourished over the centuries, we share a common passion for the aroma, the exquisite texture, the palette of colours and the distinctive flavours of the dishes that adorn our dastarkhawn. From the humble street-side dhabas to the resplendent tables of the courts, our food is always magical," said Imran Aslam, president, Geo TV.

"Foodistan will allow half forgotten fragrances to waft across our borders as chefs from India and Pakistan cook up a storm. No matter how many chefs there are on the show, this is one broth, one bhujia, one curry that cannot be spoilt. We, in Pakistan and Geo TV are looking forward to a mouth watering menu which will be a feast for the eyes. Zor ka tarka pyar se!" he added.

The dishes conjured up over the 26 episodes are judged by a three-member jury comprising Vir Sanghvi, a recipient of the Food Critic Award from the Indian Culinary Foundation; celebrity British chef Merrilees Parker; and Sonya Jehanis, an actress of Pakistan and French descent. The show is hosted by Aly Khan and Ira Dubey.

Geo TV will air Foodistan at 7pm on Saturdays and Sundays beginning 11 February.
