Injunction issued to stem illegal coverage of India’s tour of Australia

A permanent injunction has been issued by the Delhi High Court prohibiting any unauthorised content provider on India from broadcasting ESPN Star Sports' coverage of the national cricket team's current tour of Australia.

The order restrains all cable operators, hotels and websites from pirating the official coverage of the ongoing cricket series.

The injunction was filed in court by India's broadcast rights holder ESPN Software India. It claims 63 named cable operators, hotels and internet sites may take unauthorised connections and might access ESPN signals without license, giving the company just cause for apprehension, according to Indiantelevision.com.

"This order will go a long way in ensuring that the unauthorised telecast is curbed," said TS Panesar, vice president for affiliate sales, ESPN Software India. "We have a team of observers across the country to ensure that piracy does not happen and in case we spot any, we will align with the police to bring the guilty to the book."

The order now means anyone illegally showing ESPN Star Sports' feed can be held in contempt of court and can be prosecuted.
