Sports drive Spain's social TV to triple figures in one year

Over 1.5 million Spanish viewers commented on TV via Twitter during June 2013, compared to 600,000 in September 2012.

Spain's social TV has taken off during first half of 2013, during which four million Spanish viewers commented on a show via Twitter, according to the first half year report by Tuitele, quoted in Europa Press. And among all the genres, sport achieved the greatest success, receiving nearly 25% of all comments.

According to Tuitele's report, the microblogging activity is strongly linked to TV schedules in Spain. During prime time, 32% of Twitter comments are related to TV, comprising 61% from men and 39% from women. Most comments came from smartphones, clearly dominated by Android phones (52.6%). Only 1.8% of Twitter comments were made from an iPad and 0.8% from a Windows phone.

23.5% of tweets during 2012 were sports-related. Talk shows (12.4%), national series (7.3%) and films (7.1%) complete the most-commented upon rankinga. Looking to individual shows, some episodes of reality series like Big Brother and La Voz shared the top of the rankings with the Spanish national football team's matches.

Tuitele's report shows one clear tendency, supported by April, May and June as the three months with the most TV comments since Twitter launched: Spain's social TV is shooting up.
