Spain's Canal+ races towards 4K

The race for Ultra HDTV is nearing its start in Spain, and Canal+ and SES Astra aim to be the first past the line. On Thursday, Sogecable and the satellite company will hold a 4K Day, when the first broadcast of audiovisual content originally recorded for Ultra HDTV will take place.

Canal+ isn't slowing its pace in this area, especially following Telefónica Audiovisual Solutions (TSA) and Hispasat's first 4K broadcast in March during the annual DVB World Forum in Barcelona. TSA and Media Networks also participated in a similar event last month in Rio de Janeiro, in order to celebrate the new Amazonas satellite.

Apart from Canal+ and SES, TSA, Newtec, Ovide, Promovisa, Sony and Trigital will be also at the 4K's Day, which is taking place at Canal+'s studios in Madrid. All of these companies made the project of the first Ultra HDTV recording possible.

"The TV of the future is here, it's not a utopia anymore," commented SES Astra.

Canal+ has been always a pioneer in Spain when it comes to high definition. The Sogecable channel was the first to broadcast in HDTV, when after some testing in 2007, the channel released a stable schedule in HD in 2008. Currently, Canal+'s group of channels offers the widest HD content in Spain.
