TELUS turns to Openwave to optimise mobile video

Canadian telco TELUS has chosen Openwave Mobility, which develops software to manage and monetise mobile video and Web traffic, to help increase data transfer rates over its 3G and 4G mobile broadband networks.

The carrier has chosen Openwave Mobility’s Media Optimizer, a video optimisation solution that manages congestion down to individual subscribers in a quest to improve their video QoE. TELUS will also leverage Web Optimizer, a solution that uses compression, caching and transcoding techniques on websites and images in order to decrease the amount of traffic flowing over the network.

“In support of TELUS’ commitment to put our customers first and meet the growing demand for mobile video capability, TELUS is proud to partner with Openwave Mobility and in turn, give our customers a better experience while watching videos on their mobile devices,” said Jérôme Birot, director of technology strategy at TELUS. “This is a powerful solution as it enables us to manage any video type in real-time based on network conditions, so our customers get a more personal experience when consuming media on our mobile network.”

John Giere, CEO at Openwave Mobility, added: “Companies like TELUS are focusing more than ever on staying ahead of the growing traffic trends introduced by applications such as video and the ever growing popularity of Android and iOS devices. Openwave Mobility’s Media Optimizer is a comprehensive solution that allows operators to effectively lower operating costs while delivering users an enhanced quality experience. We are pleased to continue delivering innovative and advanced solutions to TELUS and look forward to continuing to provide them with outstanding solutions and support.”
