Claro to launch DTH service in Ecuador

Ecuador's national telecoms council CONATEL has approved a direct-to-home (DTH) pay-TV service for América Móvil's Claro.

The company will start delivering the service within the two next months, according to Next TV Latam.
Claro requested an official licence in the second half of 2012. Claro TV's pay-TV service is already available in Ecuador, but only on cable.

According to the telecoms authority SUPERTEL, Claro currently has 18,771 subscribers in the north of Guayaquil, and thanks to the new DTH licence the company will be able to offer its service throughout the whole country.

Ecuador's DTH market is led by DirecTV with a total of 232,388 subscribers, with CNT TV having some 44,794 subscribers.
