Sony plans 4K TV pilots

Sony Pictures Television (SPT) is taking on 4K content production for TV and plans to shoot between three and five pilots in 4K this season.

Speaking at the Hollywood Post Alliance Tech Retreat, SPT senior VP technical operations, Phil Squyres, said that this beginning stab could lead to greater things, The Hollywood Reporter noted. "My guess is we'll be doing half a dozen shows in 4K if they are picked up," he said.

SPT is also in the process of remastering Breaking Bad, which was originally shot on film, with more titles to follow, THR reports. However, Squyres noted that using 4K for the get-go makes economic sense. "Remastering costs twice as much, because you are doing the work twice," he said.

SPT also used 4K photography with Made in Jersey, Justified, Save Me, Masters of Sex for Showtime, and Michael J Fox.
