UK OTT fever rises as blinkbox inks StudioCanal content deal

The blinkbox UK streaming online video-on-demand service has beefed up its content proposition with a wide-ranging deal with leading European film distributor StudioCanal.

The Tesco-owned non-subscription VOD service will now have the rights to offer 160 films including recent releases such as Rust and Bone, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Source Code, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Hurt Locker, and modern cult classics such as David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive and Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece Apocalypse Now.

All blinkbox titles can be experienced on a variety of connected devices such as game consoles, tablets, connected TVs, Blu-Ray players, set-top boxes as well as PCs and Macs.

By signing the deal, blinkbox believes that it has set the VOD bar high, said Tesco digital entertainment CEO Michael Comish. “This latest deal brings some of the most critically acclaimed films ever made to blinkbox for 2013. That’s great news for movie fans. We set the bar high with new content in 2012 but we’ll be looking to add even more great titles this year,” he commented.

Added StudioCanal chief operating officer Robb Smith: “We are delighted to be in partnership with blinkbox and look forward to providing its innovative service with a wide range of world-class StudioCanal productions.”
