Horizon rolls out to Switzerland

Switzerland's largest cable operator UPC Cablecom is to introduce the multimedia box Horizon on 14 January 2013.

The entertainment platform will unite TV, Internet and fixed-line telephony so that customers no longer need separate standalone devices for these services.

The box, which is equipped with a 3D user interface, can be connected to computers and mobile devices such as the iPad and iPhone, enabling videos, images, music and other files to be accessed on a TV set. There is also an extensive recommendation and search function as well as apps like YouTube and WikiTivia.

The six integrated TV tuners enable quick zapping, as the next channels are already pre-loaded, and the recording of up to four HD programmes running in parallel. The hard disk contains space for more than 175 hours of recording in standard resolution and over 65 hours in high definition.

Through its website Horizon customers can watch TV channels and access more than 1,000 movies and series on their computer. With the Horizon TV app, they can also access on-demand content on their iPad or iPhone.

After the Netherlands, Switzerland is the second European country in which US parent company Liberty Global has deployed Horizon. The box, which is equipped with technology and software from companies such as Samsung, Intel, NDS, Nagravision and SeaChange, will be offered by Unitymedia and Kabel BW in Germany later this year.
