OCS renews HBO multi-year content agreement

Orange movie channel Orange Cinéma Séries (OCS) and US studio HBO have renewed their multi-year first-look programming deal, taking their partnership to a new level.

The new four-year agreement strengthens OCS's position as the first exclusive broadcaster of HBO programming in France as HBO's new series will continue to be aired on OCS and offered 24 hours after their premiere broadcast in the US. Among the new titles offered, OCS subscribers will be able to see season two of Girls this month, season three of Game of Thrones in April, season six of True Blood in June and season four of Boardwalk Empire in September.

The contract has been extended to include the on-demand viewing of past seasons of series such as The Newsroom, Veep, True Blood, The Sopranos, and The Wire. "HBO series are must-watch events. They are central to OCS' positioning and help enrich its offering," Serge Laroye, head of content at Orange and president of OCS comments, adding that HBO series contribute to OCS development.

Launched in 2008, OCS is a bouquet of five thematic channels dedicated to cinema and series which offers subscribers live or on-demand TV. Innovative services include US+24 which gives access to a selection of exclusive US series, available on demand, 24 hours after they are first broadcast in the US. A start-over function is also accessible.

OCS is carried on Orange, Canalsat and SFR platforms, which reached 750,000 subs at the end of 2012.
On the renewal of the HBO deal, OCS was competing with the pay-TV platform Canal+, which formerly broadcast HBO series. Since the French Competition Authority neutralised Canal+'s 33.3% stake in OCS, both partners have become competitors again. Canal+ was also interested into HBO productions, but will need to content itself with Orange's leftovers.
