Technicolor taps MIMO for video over Wi-Fi in set-tops

Technicolor is furthering the cause of streaming video to Wi-Fi devices with the integration of Quantenna Communications’ Wi-Fi 5GHz 4x4 MIMO chips into its next generation set top boxes and access gateways.
Technicolor said it plans to incorporate Quantenna technology into its new VDSL home gateways, a dedicated Wi-Fi access point, HD DVRs and media servers, as well as within Technicolor’s all-in-one media gateway platform.
Typically, streaming video over Wi-Fi to devices within the home is a poor-quality experience offering noticeable interruptions or quality degradation. Technicolor however says that it tested the Quantenna solution and found IP packet losses of less than one in 100 million. The MIMO technology also eliminates dead spots and ensures whole-home coverage.
"The result is a level of reliability and performance providing multi-device viewing that fully satisfies the expectations of consumers who are connected with multiple home devices," the company noted in its press release.
"The choice of this state-of-the-art technology demonstrates once again the company’s commitment to digital distribution in all forms," said Pascal Portelli, senior vice president of the solutions strategy and portfolio management of Technicolor Connected Home Division, in a statement.
