Venezuela to roll out nationwide DTT

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has announced the imminent arrival of enabling technology from Argentina to complete a DTT network in the country.

A test run for this project was already conducted back in June 2011 and DTT’s arrival will allow Venezuela to quadruple the amount of channels currently available through the analogue network. Characteristically, Chavez has already stated the new networks will not be owned by private organisations.

"The equipment, antennas and set-top-boxes from Argentina will arrive soon and we'll be able to watch digital TV," Chavez said during a public meeting at the 11th summit of countries from the Bolivian Alliance for America (ALBA) and the Miraflores Palace in Caracas.

"We won't give more networks to those in charge; they already have enough…These networks will be given to the people. For every network we have today, we'll have four new ones for the people. These are society's true communication tools," he added.

The devices will be installed in the upcoming weeks and DTT is expected to arrive in late 2012.
