French online viewers consume 2BN premium TV programmes in 2011

Research from analyst NPA Conseil and CNC has found that more than 2 billion premium TV programmes were consumed over online TV services in France in 2011, up 41.2 % on the previous year.

This report was based on results collected from Canal+ Régie, France Télévisions Publicité, GfK Retail & Technology, M6 Publicité Digital and TF1 Publicité Digital. The researchers counted data from live/ delayed TV, VOD, online TV viewing gathered from all platforms and devices , including web, IPTV, connected TV, smartphones or tablets.

The data also showed for the month of December alone, 184 million programming were viewed in 2011 compared with 130 million in the January of the year.

Catch-up TV peaked at 243 million programming requested in September and October, driven by reality TV show Secret Story (TF1), or TV series Desperate Housewives (M6) and Plus Belle la Vie (France 3). Entertainment formats remained the favourite requested genre, representing 34.4 % vs 27.1 for fiction.

The commercial success of smartphones and tablets also impacted the overall results as online TV viewing on these devices tripled and jumped from 6 to 19 million requested programmes in 2011.
