TV on-demand service Bitbop shuts down

Multiplatform TV on-demand service Bitbop has ceased its operations in Germany and the USA. This was confirmed by parent company Jesta Digital to Rapid TV News.

"It was a difficult decision for us, but mainly the rising costs for providing content across all mobile platforms including the iPad forced us to make this decision," explained Julia Hornberg, executive director corporate communications of the German-American company.

The core business of Jesta Digital would be profitable and in good shape, she added. "We will continue to invest into new products, in particular in games and entertainment applications for smartphones," Hornberg said.

Bitbop launched in August 2010 in the United States followed by Germany in September 2011. The line-up comprised US series and German TV programmes which could be watched commercial-free on computers, tablet-PCs and smartphones including the iPhone and iPad from Apple.

For a flat fee of €9.99 per month, users were granted unlimited access to the whole stock of around 3,000 videos including US series like "Entourage", "Sex and the City", "Sopranos" and "Breaking Bad", partially in the original English-language version. The German offer included productions such as "Stromberg", "Anna und die Liebe" and "Die Wochenshow".

The content was provided by TV broadcasters and production studios including ARD, ZDF, ProSiebenSat.1, MTV Networks, Sony Pictures and HBO.
