OTT to grow in Germany

The number of end-devices with internet connection in Germany will grow by 29% on average per year until 2015.

Currently, there are 13.7 million such hybrid devices in German households which deliver internet content to the TV screen, according to a current survey compiled by German consultancy goetzpartners.

According to the study, 35 million hybrid devices will be in German households by 2015 (TV sets, set-top-boxes, IPTV receivers or games consoles).

8.9% of the people taking part in the survey in Germany said that they already regularly use over-the-top content (OTT). In the UK and France, the figures are even higher with 14.2% and 15.4%. "catch up" TV, video-on-demand, surfing the internet and apps are the most popular functions.

Through OTT offerings, content providers can establish new business models and revenue sources, for example premium services like movies on demand, online shopping or advertising-financed content.

However, the study warns that digital content can only be monetised if it is detached from proprietary platforms and spread across as many distribution ways as possible instead of being tied to TV portals of single manufacturers or brands.
