German cable operators to retain analogue TV

Germany's largest cable operators want to continue offering their customers analogue television in the long run.

Cable networks will not be affected by the switch-off of analogue satellite television on 30 April 2012, Kabel Deutschland, Unitymedia and Kabel BW said in a statement.

The cable companies stress that they will continue carrying analogue and digital TV channels in parallel, thereby leaving it in their customers' hands whether and when they make the move to digital television. "There won't be a forced digitalisation," Unitymedia's managing director Lutz Schüler said in Cologne.

Germany's public and commercial TV broadcasters will terminate their analogue satellite transmissions on 30 April 2012.
