Virgin Media throws down connected TV gauntlet

UK cableco Virgin Media has given details of the technology that will enable the new generation connected TV service that in the words of a senior executive will ‘blow competitors out of the water’.

Set for launch in the UK before the end of 2010, the proposition will be centred on a TiVo-powered HD/3D set top box capable of offering 1 Terabyte of personal storage, the equivalent of around 500 hours of content.

When coupled with its TV on Demand offering the service, the new box ,says Virgin, will give UK consumers access to over 4,600 hours of TV shows, films and music videos, including hundreds of hours of HD and, the company is proud to state, 3D entertainment. It also offers catch up TV from the terrestrial broadcasters, all available instantly.

Throwing the gauntlet down to current hybrid TV devices that rely on only one broadband connection, the box also features its own dedicated internal modem able to deliver HD video and other online services without impacting customers’ regular broadband connections. Virgin claims that a typical family enjoying the new TiVo-powered TV service alongside a 50 Mbps broadband connection will be able to enjoy a seamless video experience even if others are using the Internet at the same time.

Asserted Cindy Rose, executive director of digital entertainment at Virgin Media: “Virgin Media’s next generation connected TV service - powered by TiVo - and combined with our superior broadband will blow other ‘connected TV’ products out of the water.”
