Internet TV grows in Germany

Internet-based television is a growing market with increasing variety and choice in Germany which currently counts almost 1,300 web-TV channels.

On the platforms, which are mainly accessible at no charge (96%), currently around 151 million videos are watched each day. Until 2015, the figure is expected to almost triple to around 390 million videos.

These are the results of the study “Web-TV-Monitor 2010” which Berlin-based consultancy company Goldmedia has compiled for Bavarian media authority BLM. The largest amount of videos (89%) are watched on OTT video portals such as YouTube, followed by by “catch up” IPTV services operated by TV broadcasters such as ARD, ZDF or RTL and general portals like T-Online.de, GMX.de or Web.de.

The main driver for growth is the high-quality content provided by TV channels which will increase viewers’ time budgets for online video consumption. Currently, each video is watched for 9.5 minutes on average. In 2008, with 4.8 minutes the time budget was only half as high. Until 2013, web-TV providers expect the amount to double to 18.5 minutes.

Web-TV has, like conventional television, its peak usage time in the evening, but starts slightly ahead of TV prime-time: Most online videos are watched between 18.00 and 21.00 CET.
