German TV households will no longer need a separate set-top-box in future if they want to subscribe to Sky Deutschland‘s pay-TV offer.
The Munich-based broadcaster is to introduce a conditional access module for modern flat-screen TV sets which contain an inbuilt tuner and a CI+ interface. The module with the Sky smartcard will be inserted into the CI+ slot and subsequently the channels subscribed to will be decrypted.
“Today many new TV sets with an integrated digital reception unit have a CI+ interface,“ explained Marcello Maggioni, senior vice president customer group of Sky Deutschland. “Through this innovative technology the special TV experience provided by Sky will be even more comfortable and simple.”
Sky expects the CI+ module, which is suitable for the whole Sky line-up on cable and satellite, to be ready for shipping in time for the Christmas sales period. Distribution will take place in conjunction with selected manufacturers of TV sets.
