In a clear indication that Apple TV will not be allowed to dominate the home TV industry as easily as some predict, Sony has revealed plans to launch in Europe its Qriocity network service platform that will tap into the growing connected home and TV Everywhere concepts.
Designed to connect Sony's network-enabled devices, Qriocity has been available in the US since April 2010 and the home entertainment giant is now targeting France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK with a premium streaming VOD service.
Customers will be able to select films from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Lionsgate, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM), NBC Universal International Television Distribution, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, The Walt Disney Company, and Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, as well as content from local studios. Many films will be movies are available in HD as well as SD and will be on offer via touch-button access from Sony's 2010 models of network-enabled BRAVIA TVs and Blu-ray Disc players, and Blu-ray Home Theatre systems.
