German pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland is to launch the first 3D TV service in Germany and Austria in October.
The line-up will comprise sports, movies, documentaries, music and other content. The includes the UEFA Champions League, Germany’s DFB football cup, DEL ice-hockey, golf tournaments and games from Germany’s domestic football league Bundesliga provided that national football association DFL will offer 3D footage.
The 3D offer will be accessible through Sky’s HD boxes of which more than one million are already in the market. Also, a 3D TV set with 3D glasses is needed. The service, which will initially be available via satellite and on Kabel BW’s cable network, will be for free to exiting Sky HD subscribers until the end of December.
With this move, Sky Deutschland follows the footsteps of its UK counterpart BSkyB who after long testing 3D with sports, in particular football, will launch a 3D channel for consumers on 1 October.
