MTV Spain initiates tests on DTT

MTV Spain has begun its first on-air tests on the country’s free-to-air DTT platform. The music broadcaster has begun transmitting promotional contents from its huge library, plus announcements of its next regular in-the-clear transmissions.

Some fifteen years ago the channel arrived in Spain via satellite, then also via free-to-air broadcasts. The channel later it encrypted its signal.

Now with the arrival of complete DTT coverage, MTV Networks clearly thinks it commercially possible again to open its signal up in spite of the economic and financial crisis which has hit Spain hard.

This project has been possible because MTV's owner, US media company Viacom, reached an agreement with Spain's media group Vocento (major shareholder of DTT channel Net TV).

As for the channel's programming on DTT it will continue to be the same as it is on pay-satellite, cable and DSL TV: entertainment aimed at young people, combined with exclusive TV series and alternative programs breaking the rules of traditional society. It will also contain in-house productions, of course music and international events the channel organizes to promote its music groups.

MTV on DTT will start regular transmissions next month and it has been reachable in pay-TV within Sogecable's pay-TV operator Digital+, Ono and Movistar Imagenio, Telefónica's DSL pay-TV platform so far.
