RTE commits €70m to Irish switchover

RTE, Ireland’s national TV and radio broadcaster, is poised to roll out a €70m digital TV infrastructure across the Republic, under plans just approved.

Following news that the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) will shelve the commercial tender for digital terrestrial television (DTT), Communications Minister Eamon Ryan affirmed RTE’s plans for the multi-million-euro scheme, under which the broadcaster will build a digital service providing full coverage of the ROI as well as ‘significant’ coverage in the North.

The goal is to complete the roll-out in time for analogue switch-off, scheduled for two years’ time. The new, digital infrastructure will provide both terrestrial (51 transmitter sites covering 98% of the population) and satellite coverage for the remaining 2%, ensuring complete coverage.

Some seven to nine free-to-air channels will be available, as well as a number of radio stations.
