NBN to spend A$1bn on satellites

NBN_CoAustralia’s NBN Co, the public-private partnership building the country’s national broadband network, plans to make satellite-delivered broadband capacity a key plank of the network.

 

Satellite will be used to deliver an estimated 2% of the capacity of the network and NBN Co will spend up to A$1 billion on two Ka-band satellites to deliver the capacity needed. Australia’s terrain often makes fibre build-out unfeasible, with some mountainous areas in the ranges outside Sydney and Melbourne unsuited also to wireless (your correspondent’s home in a steep valley, for instance).

NBN Co will need to generate its own capacity for its network, with not enough available currently for the promised speeds of up to 12 Mbps. Two satellites would be needed to provide back-up if one failed or was hit by space junk, NBN Co CEO Mike Quigley told a recent conference.
