World Cup gives mobile broadband a boost

World_Cup_mobile_TVA report from mobile broadband solutions firm Allot Communications has found significant increases in key metrics for new mobile video delivery platforms during the recent World Cup, including mobile data bandwidth and YouTube usage.

Mobile data bandwidth usage increased by 24% during World Cup matches and web browsing traffic by 35% during match time. YouTube grew by 32% on post-match mornings, greatly contributing to the 16% increase that occurred in mobile data bandwidth usage during the World Cup period (June 11-July 11).

Lunchtime matches European time showed the largest bandwidth increase with 31%, presumably as those at work and unable to reach a television, monitored the matches. Meanwhile, video streaming and P2P increased moderately by 11% and 13% respectively during the period.

Allot’s report says: “The small screen did not replace the big screen during the FIFA 2010 World Cup, but instead created a new category. Rather than replacing televisions, mobile devices found a niche where they function alongside the big screen, enhancing the viewer experience by offering additional information in real time, and providing the ability to watch replays at leisure and share them with friends.”

The Allot MobileTrends World Cup Report is based on statistics collected from mobile networks around the world representing more than 90 million subscribers. Data was collected during the 2010 FIFA World Cup period (11 June to 11 July) for 42 individual matches.
