Deutsche Telekom: 50,000 mobile World Cup subs

Jabulani_mobile_tvDeutsche Telekom sold 50,000 subscriptions for its coverage of the soccer World Cup on mobile phones, reports German financial newspaper Handelsblatt, citing sources at the telco.

For €4.95 per month, customers were able to follow all 64 games live in full length on their mobile phones. One-day only access was available for €1.95. The precondition was a UMTS-capable reception device.

Mobile soccer fans watched each World Cup game on the small screen for 40 minutes on average. That is considerably longer than average viewing of domestic soccer league Bundesliga which Telekom also offers on its mobile network as well. Bundesliga matches are only followed 10 minutes on average.

However, with 400,000 subscribers, the number of Bundesliga customers is considerably higher than the number of World Cup followers.
